NOTE: Commentary By Knuckles “The Wonder Dog”

Well, now we have it. The month of March is now flying by. For many of us, it can’t fly fast enough! March is an interesting month when you really stop to think about it. So much stuff in just 31 days. It’s  jam-packed with historical dates, global events and the closing out of winter. YUP, I said the CLOSING OUT OF WINTER! You may recognize this “closing out” development by its astrological name: “The Vernal Equinox”. I prefer to embrace the term: SPRING! (Hold this thought of SPRING…I’ll come back to it!)

The 1st week in March experienced pre-Lenten celebrations around the world including “Carnival” (Rio de Janeiro) and “Mardi Gras” (New Orleans). “Mardi Gras,” which is french for “Fat Tuesday” is synonymous with revelry before “Ash Wednesday.” Historians say the tradition dates back to Roman times, when the newly converted Christians retained vestiges of their pagan festival, “Lupercalia,” as a period of celebration before the penance during the 40 days of Lent.

That journey to SPRING continued during the 2nd week in March by honoring the arrival of “Daylight Savings Time” on 3/9 along with the 1912 Founding of  “Girl Scouts” on 3/12. That’s a couple of big events for 1 week, wouldn’t you agree?

St Patty's Day DogThis 3rd week in March starts with “St. Patrick’s Day” on 3/17 with celebrations from Dublin to New York to Chicago. ( It was so cold there, I understand the Chicago River had to be cleared of ice in some spots, in order for boating officials to complete the annual painting of the green!) The 17th of March also marks “Evacuation Day” in Boston. On 3/17/1776, George Washington had fortifications and cannons placed on Dorchester Heights. The British troops occupying Boston at the time realized they were outgunned. British ships departed Boston Harbor and the liberation of Boston by the Patriots (The original ones…not the Football ones…) brought an end to a hated 8-year occupation.Evacuation Day

Look, you know I am a Dachshund. I hope YOU find all of this historical stuff of some interest. (I find it boring…) For ME, there is only 1 thing of interest in the month of March…THE ARRIVAL OF SPRING! Yup, on 3/20 Spring arrives officially at 12:57 P.M. (EDT). I want to go out on my deck again. I want to see grass again, for personal reasons. I want a ride on the golf cart again. I want to lay on my back and soak up some sun. I want to hear birds again. I want to chase squirrels again.  OK, OK I’m done complaining about my “wants”. I’d bet each of YOU have several “wants” just like me. Let’s face it, we all deserve the arrival of Spring this year. If not for anything else, it closes out winter. Warm & sunny days are ahead. We should all be so lucky to lay in the sun and have our bellies rubbed! As always, that’s the way I see it and I stand by my opinion. HAPPY SPRING!Spring Image

Let Me Vent...

Let Me Vent…

Well, now we have it. It appears as though the turning point in this harsh Winter is finally here. This coming weekend, we will usher in Daylight Savings Time 2014, and spring our clocks ahead! For the record, here are some BORING historical facts. Daylight Savings Time begins on March 9th, at 2:00 AM and will fall back again on November 2nd. It is meant to be a way to make better use of the daylight in the evenings, by setting the clocks forward one hour during the longer days of summer. Who came up with this stuff? Well, there is an answer to that question… BENJAMIN FRANKLIN!Ben Franklin

History suggests the idea of daylight savings time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 during his stay in Paris. He published an essay titled “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light” that proposed to economize the use of candles; by rising earlier to make better use of the morning sunlight. At age 78, Franklin was confined to his house in a Parisian suburb. Friends with the editor of the JOURNAL DE PARIS, Franklin was encouraged to work on writing about simple problems. To show his friends his appreciation, Ben Franklin wrote a series of fun pieces for their amusement, one of which was this infamous letter about “Daylight Savings Time.” Are you kidding me? This whole thing was a joke?? Ben was just offering up a gag for a French newspaper?? Hey, Daylight Savings Time is a really big deal in the United States! Not only do the days become longer, but we embrace the fact that SPRING is actually on the way in just a few weeks. These are all GOOD THINGS aren’t they?spring forward

Look, you know I am a Dachshund. Excuse me for dwelling on the BAD THINGS associated with Daylight Savings Time. I am leading the charge to blame Benjamin Franklin for the HOUR OF SLEEP we will lose this weekend. I understand that longer days and warmer weather seems like a fair trade, but I prefer to sleep in on Sunday mornings. Not to “broad brush” but most of my canine counterparts would agree that ANY loss of sleep is a deal-breaker. If you think I’m being unfair here, you may find these final facts of interest. There are 5 locations within the United States that DO NOT OBSERVE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME: Arizona, Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and American Samoa. (If you live in these locations you do not need to spring forward.) Can you guess WHY they don’t observe Daylight Savings Time? The answer is simple – They like to sleep! Let me close by adding a 6th location to this list… MY OWN BED. As always, that’s the way I see it and I stand by my opinion.

I see LOVE today!

I see LOVE today!

Well, now we have it. TODAY IS VALENTINE’S DAY! They say this is a day for love, fondness and affections. They say this is a day for the hopeless romantics among us, and for those individuals (Pets Included…) who are special in our lives. You can’t escape the “Warm & Fuzzy” feelings this day evokes in each of us. Just this morning, the National News reported that Americans will spend an estimated $17.3 Billion dollars on Valentine’s Day gifts this year. This is a good thing, isn’t it?? Well… I certainly thought it was. Then, this report also highlighted the many common mistakes made by singles & couples, each Valentine’s Day. Poor planning, poor time management and poor decision making; appear to be the culprits here.

Look, you know that I am a Dachshund. I am a happy pet, living in a happy home. BUT, even I HAVE OBSERVED some of these “What Were You Thinking?” moments over the years… In hopes of helping anyone reading this blog, let me just point out a few items as a “Public Service Announcement”:    1) Shopping at a “CVS” for fine Jewelry, romantic Gifts and select European Chocolates is a cry for help. (It doesn’t matter you have a 20% Off Coupon…)    2) It’s OK to skip getting a Valentine’s Day Card. (I have one word for you: HALLMARK…)    3) A supermarket bundle of Flowers, with extra, extra “Baby’s Breath” is JUST as good as a dozen, long-stemmed Roses.    4) Going out to Dinner without a reservation on Valentine’s Day Evening, is not going to be a problem. (How crowded could it possibly be?…)    5) The “Complete 3-Stooges” Collector’s Edition – DVD set, is NOT a recipe for an evening of passion… Well, each year Valentine’s Day mistakes are made and each year apologies are gladly accepted. This is what makes us, and Valentine’s Day so special. Go tell someone you love them. Always remember, “It’s the ThDaschunds - Heartought That Counts” and IValentine Ants stand by my opinion!

Groundhog Day 2014

Is That My "Shadow" I See?

Is That My “Shadow” I See?

Well, now we have it. SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER!  This as declared by the famous Groundhog, “Punxsutawny Phil” down there in  Pennsylvania. All the Officials claim he saw his shadow, meaning a longer winter ahead. ( I think all the TV lights and cameras certainly helped produce a shadow!) It’s not a stretch to figure out WHY the Groundhog declared more winter this year, as compared with his missed forecast from last year. PHIL WAS AFRAID TO BE WRONG AGAIN! (You may recall, that we here in NH,  got more snow than we could measure last year; RIGHT AFTER he declared an “Early Spring”… )

Look, I am a Dachshund. I spend a great deal of time outdoors every day. Given the months of frigid temperatures, overuse of the term “Polar Vortex” and the tons of snow we received early-on this season; it’s not a stretch to expect 6 MORE WEEKS OF WINTER around here. I stand by my opinion, WITHOUT all the fanfare, from down there in Gobbler’s Knob!
